■SNS slander lawsuit (against Hasumi Toshiko and 2 others)

[Court summary]

On June 8, 2020, manga artist Hasumi Toshiko filed a lawsuit claiming that a post she made on Twitter had defamed her, seeking 5.5 million yen in damages from Hasumi and an apology advertisement, as well as 1.1 million yen in damages from each of the two people who retweeted the post.

On November 30, 2021, the Tokyo District Court handed down its verdict, ordering Hasumi to pay 880,000 yen and 110,000 yen each to the two people who retweeted the post.

In December 2021, Hasumi and one of the two people who retweeted the tweet appealed.

On November 10, 2022, the Tokyo High Court handed down its verdict, ordering Hasumi to pay 1.1 million yen and one person who retweeted the tweet to pay 220,000 yen, double the amount awarded by the original court.

In December 2022, Hasumi appealed, but on September 14, 2023, the Supreme Court dismissed the appeal and the high court ruling was finalized.

September 14, 2023: The Supreme Court rejects the appeal and the appellate court decision becomes final.
